Description:

Phobys is an augmented reality (AR) application designed to diminish arachnophobia. Begin by evaluating your fear through the two complimentary test levels, then progress your training with the economical full version. This tool aims to assist individuals in managing real spider encounters more calmly and reducing fear levels.

Who is Phobys intended for? Phobys is suitable for individuals with a mild, clinically inconsequential fear of spiders who are aged 16 or older.

Development of Phobys The Phobys AR application is a product developed by the University of Basel and MindGuide to aid users in acclimating to spider-related scenarios utilizing a scientifically proven approach called exposure therapy. The application projects a lifelike 3D AR spider model into the user's environment, creating a virtual simulation of spider presence.

In a randomized, controlled study conducted by the University of Basel to evaluate the treatment's efficacy in real-life settings, participants either completed at-home training with Phobys (30 minutes, 6 times) or were assigned to a control group. Pre- and post-treatment, participants approached a live spider enclosed in a box based on their fear threshold. The Phobys-trained group displayed reduced fear and disgust in real spider situations, approaching closer compared to the control group, with statistically significant outcomes. Function of Phobys The AR app consists of 10 levels comprising various tasks involving exposure and interaction with a realistic 3D AR spider model. Instructions are provided within small text pop-up windows during levels.

Users can assess their fear using the free version and then advance to the full version for comprehensive training by unlocking all 10 levels permanently. The training initiates gently by observing spiders from a distance, progressively intensifying exposure levels. Users start at the lowest level and advance gradually. After each level, users report task completion, fear ratings, and disgust ratings. Users repeat levels with high fear or disgust ratings until comfortable to proceed.

Every level begins with scanning a surface like a table or floor approximately one meter away. Tapping the screen projects the 3D AR spider model onto the scanned area. Optimal results require flat structured surfaces with adequate lighting and devoid of obstacles.

End training anytime by closing the application.
